The sheep are gone from the picture. Suddenly there’s a table, and oil, and a cup.
And the enemies are still present.
Read verse 5, and notice that nobody asks them to leave.

What stood out?
Go around the room. Each person reads one thing they marked. If you know why it stood out, say so. If you don’t, “it just stood out” is a complete answer. Nobody explains, nobody corrects.

Overflowing blessings: the Shepherd who overflows
This verse shifts to the imagery of God as a gracious host, offering peace and abundance even in the face of adversity. The story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 (John 6:1-14) illustrates God’s ability to transform scarcity into overflow, providing more than enough for all. Just as Jesus met the physical and spiritual needs of the crowd, God prepares a table for us, anoints us with His favor, and fills us to bless others.
- God’s blessings are abundant even in the midst of our adversities.
- The prepared table represents God’s peace and provision, even amid opposition.
- Many readers hear the anointing with oil as a picture of God’s welcome and honor, and the overflowing cup as His abundance.
- Overflow isn’t meant for hoarding but for sharing. God fills us to bless those around us.
Read this one out loud.
The same truth across Scripture
God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. Notice the sentence does not stop at “all that you need.”
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. Jesus using the same picture David used, and applying it to what you hand over rather than to what you receive.
Discussion questions
- What does it reveal about the Kingdom of God that He prepares a table in the presence of enemies? How does this align with Jesus’ teachings about loving our enemies?
- How does understanding God’s abundant provision challenge you to let go of a scarcity mindset?
- If God overflowed your cup, who in your life would benefit most from the blessings He is pouring into you?

Let’s pray together
Read Psalm 23:5 aloud again, slowly.
Pray together: “Come, Holy Spirit. Fill us past what we need.”
In pairs or small clusters, pray for one another:
- In what areas do you feel empty and in need of God’s overflow?
- How can we pray for God to fill you to overflowing so you can bless others?
Leave space for silence, listening, and Spirit-led prayer. If someone senses a word, a Scripture, or a picture for another, offer it gently and pray into it.
Let’s pray
Breakthrough is when God’s Kingdom breaks into your reality: His healing where there is pain, His freedom where there is bondage, His presence where there is loneliness. Jesus is King; His freedom, peace and purpose are available now. Pray from that Kingdom, not toward it.
Be still for a moment. Open your hands and simply pray: “Come, Holy Spirit.”
Ask: “Father, what have you already given me more of than I need?” Then: “What were you highlighting when I marked the passage?” Stay open to a word, a Scripture, a picture, or a prompting.
Pray boldly into what He shows you. Name one person the overflow is for, and pray for them by name.
You can pray more than once. Stay present, and trust that God is at work. Take your time; there is no hurry.
Choose one. Say it out loud so someone else hears it.
Next time you gather, share what you practiced and how God used it, not for pressure but for encouragement.

Done.
Revival comes in the overflow: when we are filled to the brim with God’s presence, we become vessels through which His love and power flow to others.
